We use environmental certifications both when sourcing materials—such as wood and textiles—and when certifying our own products.
Möbelfakta & EU Ecolabel
Since 2011, we have certified furniture through Möbelfakta. Our goal is for all products intended for public environments to meet Möbelfakta’s requirements. Many of our products have been certified at launch. A Möbelfakta certification is valid for five years, after which recertification is required. When selecting fabrics, our price list indicates which textiles are certified with the EU Ecolabel.
EPD
In recent years, we have also carried out carbon footprint calculations on our furniture to measure the greenhouse gas emissions associated with each product. This allows us not only to evaluate quality, but also to assess environmental performance. It helps us identify opportunities for improvement in existing products and apply those learnings to future product development.
The tool we use to calculate CO₂ footprint is EPD International. An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a verified and standardized document that reports a product’s total environmental impact throughout its life cycle—from raw material extraction to production, use, and end-of-life handling. An EPD value is based on an assumed product lifespan of 15 years.
A product’s actual lifespan is a crucial factor in determining its real environmental impact per year. The annual impact differs significantly depending on whether a piece of furniture lasts for 5 years or 25 years. In other words, high quality is essential for longevity and has a major effect on overall environmental impact.

MÖBELFAKTA

Möbelfakta is a sustainability certification for furniture, owned by the Swedish Environmental Research Institute (IVL) and the Swedish Federation of Wood and Furniture Industry (TMF). Its requirements cover quality, environmental performance, and social responsibility, and are aligned with ISO 14024. This means that products must meet environmental criteria set by an independent third party, that the requirements are continuously strengthened, and that they are developed from a life cycle perspective. The criteria also align with requirements set by the Swedish National Agency for Public Procurement, Kammarkollegiet, and ADDA Purchasing Center.

EPD (Environmental Product Declaration)

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a tool used to ensure climate-smart products by calculating a product’s carbon footprint throughout its life cycle. Swedese has been certified since 2024 in the EPD International system, which is connected to the global EPD organization, ECO Platform.

ISO 14001

In February 2002, Swedese was certified according to the ISO 14001 environmental management standard. Based on this, Swedese Möbler AB strives to ensure that all decisions and operations minimize environmental impact in terms of raw materials, production processes, and finished furniture.

FSC

FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council, an independent, international membership organization that promotes environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world’s forests through its certification system.

PEFC

PEFC stands for Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification. The Swedish PEFC forest standard aims to support economically sustainable and valuable forest production, preserve biodiversity, and safeguard cultural, social, and aesthetic values.

ECOLABEL

The EU Ecolabel (formerly known as the EU Flower) is Europe’s equivalent to the Nordic Swan for textiles. The certification is governed by ISO 14024 and takes a life cycle perspective, considering the product’s total environmental impact. Our price list includes recommended fabrics, indicating which are EU Ecolabel certified and which upholstery materials contain at least 30% recycled content.

PRODUCT PASSPORTS

Digital Product Passports (DPP) are a set of sustainability data that enable circular products and business models. Each product is assigned a unique identity that can be linked to one or more data sources containing detailed information about that specific product. Swedese collaborated on the development of product passports between 2020 and 2022 together with Chalmers University of Technology. In 2025, a product passport was developed as part of the Interior Cluster project “Data to Business.”
